Establishing Safe & Realistic Speed Limits
Sunday, May 13, 2012 at 10:18AM You are invited to join us for a presentation from the Michigan State Police, Tuesday, June 19th at 9:00am at the Allendale Township Auditorium regarding “Establishing Safe and Realistic Speed Limits”
SUMMARY:
A vast majority of speed limits across the country are not established
correctly and, as a result, put police officers and crash investigators
in a difficult position. Many times a motorist in violation of a posted
speed limit is actually driving at a safe and reasonable speed and is
not creating a traffic safety issue.
The relationship between speed limits and actual travel speeds is
counterintuitive and often misunderstood. The presentation will
illustrate the basic engineering principals that should be used to
establish a proper, enforceable speed limit and will highlight several
examples of what occurs, or more importantly what doesn’t occur, after
a speed limit is corrected.
