Announcement Regarding mid-day 4th of July Celebration Mid-Day Activities
May 27, 2020 - The Allendale Township Board of Trustees made the difficult decision last night to cancel the mid-day 4th of July activities in the Township Park.
We know that many people are disappointed in the decision. However, after consulting with vendors, receiving cancellations from some of our annual attractions, and evaluating the remaining activities, we don’t feel that this year’s activities would be both safe and successful. We delayed making the decision as long as possible, but needed to make a decision this week in order to provide our remaining vendors with appropriate notice.
THE FIREWORKS WILL CONTINUE AS PLANNED. We realize that factors can change between now and July 4, but we are doing everything we can to keep the fireworks on the calendar.
Announcement Regarding 2020 Allendale 4th of July Celebration
May 13, 2020 - The Allendale Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors made the very difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Allendale 4th of July Parade.
Understanding that this parade belongs to the community and the Allendale Chamber has the privilege of planning it, the Chamber Board did not take the responsibility of this decision lightly. In recent weeks, we have consulted with community, business, government, and law enforcement representatives to reach this conclusion.
Several of those contributing factors include:
-Grand Valley State University campuses are closed until the end of July which means the parade route on campus is not available for use.
-We inquired about a route which would utilize Allendale Public Schools campuses and likewise, with the mandated closing, we are not able to access that property.
-We have a divided state highway through town instead of a traditional downtown district which poses great safety concerns for attendees and participants making parade planning logistics almost impossible.
-The expenses associated with the parade are covered by the generous sponsorship support of local businesses. As we know, our businesses are not in a financially secure position to contribute to this event right now.
-We have no way to predict how the Covid-19 situation will evolve over the next two months and therefore have no way to implement the required safeguards to ensure the public’s health and safety.
We have spent a great deal of effort considering alternative parade routes, running financial models, and requesting clarity on guidelines for large gatherings. The painstaking reality is, we are not able to plan for an event of this size and magnitude under the current circumstances.
In an effort to honor the holiday, the Allendale Chamber of Commerce has arranged for a special aircraft flyover demonstration on the morning of July 4th for your family to enjoy from the comfort and safety of your home. Please look to the sky over Allendale between 10am and 10:30am.
Various community organizations plan the different aspects of park activities such as the car show and bbq sale. We don’t have information about their intentions at this time but should have more information in the coming weeks.
At this time, the fireworks celebration at dusk, sponsored and hosted by Allendale Charter Township, will continue as planned. We understand a number of factors may change that plan between now and the 4th of July so we are encouraging people to watch the Allendale 4th of July Facebook page, in addition to the Chamber and Township websites for updated information.
We recognize the disappointment that will come from the suspension of this event, but we are so thankful for an understanding community. We look forward to the opportunity to celebrate the holidays and milestones ahead together soon. We are #AllendaleStrong.
